The Breezeway property is a fresh and contemporary take on a classic Hamptons style where the focus on a family-centric design was key. As the family grew, the home had to accommodate all that this brings. In-laws staying, a sense of space and privacy as children grow older and entertaining areas that could comfortably and joyfully allow for big gatherings. Designers Sally and Renée of Heliconia always create a sense of soulfulness in their work and The Breezeway is no exception. The connection between inside and out played a big role in both the inspiration and practical elements of the project. A knockdown rebuild is certainly a clean slate, but the connectedness to the surrounding environment and how this would impact both the architecture and interior was integral to the design process.
“The home resides in a coastal setting on a bushland fringe, so we wanted to stay true to the locality and create an atmosphere that reflected both environments with a fresh and breezy ambience, anchored by warming, natural materials and textures.”

Open-plan spaces of generous proportions, carefully considered joinery and a warm materiality throughout is obvious. The palette lends itself to the here and now but will also remain current for years to come. The spatial planning had to meet the functional requirements of the family and the furniture played a large part in not only filling these spaces but doing so in a way that worked within the palette and tone of the home that Sally and Renée had designed.
“Furniture selection needs to complement the way we live day to day, so we conduct spatial planning at the start of our projects with furniture arrangement in mind. Beyond its functionality, furniture also helps define the atmosphere in a room, with colour, texture, shape, scale – so we spend a lot of time making sure we achieve the right combination of pieces to achieve the perfect function, form and feel.”
“It was important to ensure the furniture held its own as a design statement but was also functional and timeless, so we were looking for interesting texture, quality workmanship and pieces that offer colour options. Satara was fabulous in helping us customise pieces to ensure all the timber in the room worked together and we could achieve the colour and textural palette we were aiming for.”

With the clients incredibly happy with the result and enjoying the home that was so beautifully designed for them, it’s now time for the designers to reflect on a project that enabled them to be fully immersed in the design process from beginning to end.
“They (the clients) are thrilled! The home’s atmosphere is truly lovely, and all the considered touches enhance the way they live, which was the goal. They’re often entertaining and welcoming friends and family into their home and guests are regularly staying over too, but equally, as busy professionals, they love the sanctuary and privacy it provides to their family. They even loved the process of the build which makes us very happy! “
